Etymology

The word "forest" comes from Middle English forest, from Old French forest (also forès) "forest, vast expanse covered by trees", believed to be a borrowing (probably via Frankishor Old High German) of the Medieval Latin word foresta "open wood". Foresta was first used by Carolingian scribes in the Capitularies of Charlemagne to refer specifically to the king's royal hunting grounds. The term was not endemic to Romance languages (e.g. native words for "forest" in the Romance languages evolved out of the Latin word silva "forest, wood"; cf. Italian, Spanish, Portuguese selva; Romanian silvă; Old French selve); and cognates in Romance languages, such as Italian foresta, Spanish and Portuguese floresta, etc. are all ultimately borrowings of the French word. The exact origin of Medieval Latinforesta is obscure. Some authorities claim the word derives from the Late Latin phraseforestam silvam, meaning "the outer wood"; others claim the term is a latinisation of theFrankish word *forhist "forest, wooded country", assimilated to forestam silvam (a common practise among Frankish scribes). Frankish *forhist is attested by Old High German forst"forest", Middle Low German vorst "forest", Old English fyrhþ "forest, woodland, game preserve, hunting ground", and Old Norse fýri "coniferous forest", all of which derive fromProto-Germanic *furχísa-, *furχíþja- "a fir-wood, coniferous forest", from Proto-Indo-European *perkwu- "a coniferous or mountain forest, wooded height". Uses of the word "forest" in English to denote any uninhabited area of non-enclosure are now considered archaic.[4] The word was introduced by the Norman rulers of England as a legal term (appearing in Latin texts like the Magna Carta) denoting an uncultivated area legally set aside for hunting by feudal nobility (see Royal Forest).[4][5] These hunting forests were not necessarily wooded much, if at all. However, as hunting forests did often include considerable areas of woodland, the word "forest" eventually came to mean wooded land more generally.[citation needed] By the start of the fourteenth century the word appeared in English texts, indicating all three senses: the most common one, the legal term and the archaic usage.[4]

Other terms used to mean "an area with a high density of trees" are wood, woodland, wold, weald, holt, frith and firth. Unlike forest, these are all derived from Old English and were not borrowed from another language. Some classifications now reserve the term woodlandfor an area with more open space between trees and distinguish among woodlands, open forests, and closed forests based on crown cover.[6]

[edit]Distribution

Forests can be found in all regions capable of sustaining tree growth, at altitudes up to thetree line, except where natural fire frequency or other disturbance is too high, or where the environment has been altered by human activity.

The latitudes 10° north and south of the Equator are mostly covered in tropical rainforest, and the latitudes between 53°Nand 67°N have boreal forest. As a general rule, forests dominated by angiosperms (broadleaf forests) are more species-rich than those dominated by gymnosperms (conifer, montane, or needleleaf forests), although exceptions exist.

Forests sometimes contain many tree species only within a small area (as in tropical rain and temperate deciduous forests), or relatively few species over large areas (e.g., taiga and aridmontane coniferous forests). Forests are often home to many animal and plant species, andbiomass per unit area is high compared to other vegetation communities. Much of this biomass occurs below ground in the root systems and as partially decomposed plantdetritus. The woody component of a forest contains lignin, which is relatively slow todecompose compared with other organic materials such as cellulose or carbohydrate.

Forests are differentiated from woodlands by the extent of canopy coverage: in a forest, the branches and the foliage of separate trees often meet or interlock, although there can be gaps of varying sizes within an area referred to as forest. A woodland has a more continuously open canopy, with trees spaced farther apart, which allows more sunlight to penetrate to the ground between them

A forest, also referred to as a wood or thewoods and less often as a "wold" (or "weald"), "holt", or "frith" (or "firth"),

is an area with a high density of trees. There are many definitions of "forest" based on various criteria.[1][vague]These plant communities cover approximately 9.4% of the Earth's surface (or 30% of total land area), though they once covered much more (about 50% of total land area), in many different regions and function as habitats for

organisms, hydrologic flow modulators, and soilconservers, constituting one of the most important aspects of the biosphere. Although forests are classified primarily by trees, the concept of a forest ecosystem includes additional species (such as smaller plants,fungi[2] , bacteria, and animals) as well as physical and chemical processes such as energy flow and nutrient cycling.

A typical forest is composed of the overstory(or upper tree layer of the canopy) and theunderstory. The understory is further subdivided into the shrub layer, herb layer, and sometimes also a moss layer. In some complex forests, there is also a well-defined lower tree layer. Forests are central to all human life because they provide a diverse range of resources, they store carbon, aid in regulating our climate, purify water and mitigate natural hazards such as floods. Forests also contain roughly 90% of the world terrestrial biodiversity.[]

iqbal manzil sialkot

File:Iqbal Manzil Skt.jpg

Iqbal Manzil
is the birth place of famous poet DrMuhammad
Iqbal in the centre of the historic city ofSialkot.[1] It has been

converted in to a museum cum library. Iqbal Manzil was

purchased in 1861 by Mohammad Rafique, the grandfather of

Dr Mohammed Iqbal. The house was originally very small, but

each successor kept adding to it and the building grew in size.
File:IqbalManzil3.jpgAfter the death of his father, Iqbal named his elder brother, Ata Mohammad, the owner of the house. Ata Mohammed left two sons after his death who left the house and took up residences in Karachi and Lahore. Many tourists come especially toSialkot to take a look at the poet’s home, which has now been restored as part of national heritage, where he lived and wrote poetry that one day would make him the legend that he is. TheGovernment of Pakistan bought Iqbal Manzil for its restoration in 1971 and handed it over to the Archaeology Department, who aptly accorded it the status of a cultural heritage. After some renovation, Iqbal Manzil was converted into a library-cum-museum. The museum was inaugurated in 1977.The museum consists of a guided tour of some rooms of the mansion, and displays some furniture and other objects used by Allama Iqbal. Riaz Hussain Naqvi has been the curator at the Iqbal Manzil since 1986.

Sialkot Fort is one of the oldest forts in Pakistan. The city ofSialkot, which is one of the oldest cities of Pakistan (more than 5000 years old), has historical significance due to the Fort, The well-known historian, Diayas Jee, has stated that Raja Sálbánre-established Sialkot city around the 2nd century CE. and ruled over the area between the rivers Ravi and Chenab.Sálbán built the Sialkot Fort (which, at the time, had double walls) for the defence of the city. Raja Sálbán, supposedly, used more than 10,000 laborers and masons for the repair and extension of the Fort with huge stone slabs and rocks which were brought to the location from Pathankot. This work was completed in a stipulated period of two years, at which point, the fort had two huge walls and 12 bastions. Raja Salbahan had a great respect for his wife, Rani Achchran, and loved her very much, so he built a very attractive palace for her which was (approximately) 9 square miles (20 km2) in area near Roras (Ugoki) and was designed and constructed by the architects and engineers from Greece. A wonderful road was built from the Fort to Rani Achchran's palace (present-day Sahabpura Road in Sialkot). From 1179 to 1186, Shahab ud-Din Ghorioccupied Lahore and Sindh. With the help of the Raja of Jammu, he occupied the Sialkot Fort. The Sialkot Fort was given to the Janjua tribes by Sultan Firuz Shah Tughluq who accepted their suzerainty in that region around late 14th century CE.

Rashid Niaz, another historian who has authored Tareekh-i-Sialkot, has written that the second wall of the ancient Sialkot Fort was discovered by the Sialkot Municipal Corporation in 1923 while carrying out civil works in the city. At that time, archaeology experts from Taxila and Delhi visited Sialkot and confirmed that the stone wall (faseel) was 5,000 years old. Later, that wall was re-buried.

present, few ruins, including a bastion, are all that is left of the Fort. The Archaeology Department of Punjab and the district administration have left the historical Sialkot Fort to rot. Among the many ills plaguing it is the growing number of encroachments which are a blot on its face. The offices of the district government are located on the premises of the Fort but none of the officials concerned seems willing to improve the lot of the centuries-old structure.
